“The new cinema of Buje” documentary explores the cultural scene of the Istrian town of
Buje through the prism of revival and opening of its cinema. It was directed by
Leonardo di Costanzo, a renowned Italian-Croatian director, and tells the story about the local community experiencing a kind of rebirth through art. The documentary depicts the rich cultural heritage of Buje in the past, followed by decades of urban decay and lack of cultural venues. The artists of this small town fought hard to save it from oblivion and effects of globalisation, and it is precisely the cinema that symbolised revitalisation and reunion.
Through interesting interviews with the local population, artists and cultural activists, “The new cinema of Buje” seeks answers to important questions about the significance of cultural events and institutions and the way they shape the life and identity of the community. It also features several eminent events that took place at the Buje cinema and addressed social and political topics, thus becoming an important part of Istria’s cultural scene.
The exceptional value of this documentary lies in its story about the people, their hardships and struggles to survive. At the same time, it opens up new horizons for numerous artists and creatives of the Buje area, but above all it serves as an inspiration for all of us to get the ball rolling and make a change in our community or hometown.
