" Often described as a
fishermen’s town in northwestern Istria, Novigrad nurtures a timeless bond with fishing. Fishermen have always been the heart and soul of Novigrad. You will often see them gathered around their trawlers in
Mandrač harbour, teasing one another while sorting through the nets with their fingers hardened by the wind and the salt. " – This is how the brochure
Fishing Tradition in Novigrad begins. It's the first publication that narrates an untold story of the enduring bond between Novigrad and fishing, a bond that dates back to ancient times.
It took a full year to create a scholarly work about the key facts from the history of fishing in the Novigrad area and to gather stories from active and retired fishermen, as well as other witnesses of the golden era of fishing. This includes techniques of catch and more, delving into the history and unique aspects of fishing in the Novigrad region.
The FishInNo project (Fishing Tradition In Novigrad) has made it possible to finally create a work about this tradition, which everyone can now read in four languages. Besides the printed edition, the brochure
Fishing Tradition in Novigrad is also available digitally, and you can
download it as a PDF document through this link. This touch of both past and present has been made possible through funding from the Fisheries Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, as part of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. The
FishInNo project was initiated by the Tourist Board of the Town of Novigrad – Cittanova in partnership with the City of Novigrad, through the Local Initiatives of Northwestern Istria, FLAG "Pinna Nobilis": Measure 2.3.1. – Support for activities promoting, marketing, and preserving the maritime/fishing traditions and heritage of the FLAG fishing area. The share of public funding amounts to €59.224,00.
