Ex tempore Grožnjan, art here and now

Every year in the last week of September, numerous domestic and foreign painters and art lovers flock to Grožnjan to participate in Ex tempore, the most important cultural event of the Italian national minority in Croatia and Slovenia.

This multicultural event started as an art contest established in 1994 by the Italian Association and the University of Trieste in collaboration with the local branch of the Italian Association and the Municipality of Grožnjan.

Even though art is usually created in studios and workshops, in silence and away from the public eye, Ex tempore invites artists to go outside and make the process visible. During the event, the town of artists is filled with creatives and curious visitors, making its streets a dynamic exhibition space.

Ex tempore is not just an art contest. You can also enjoy exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, sports activities and, of course, tastings of local produce.

Previous contest winners include established artists such as Paolo Cervi Kervischer from Trieste, Alfred De Locatelli from Gorizia, Hari Ivančić from Buzet, Zdravko Milić from Labin, Claudio Ugussi from Buje and Igor Zenzerović from Pula.

The first three cash prizes are awarded by an international jury, including the cash prize of the town of Grožnjan and the Daria Vlahov Horvat prize in the form of a solo exhibition at the Fonticus gallery in Grožnjan.
