How does it feel coming first in your age group at Istria Gran Fondo in Umag?
It feels great! I set ambitious goals for every race I participate in. As the Istria Gran Fondo race runs along the roads I prefer for training, my expectations were even higher. To me, Gran Fondo is almost a ’local’ race, so I always try to go the extra mile. I did just fine on this section and achieved an excellent ranking. How could I not be happy?
2.      You also participated in a time trial the day before, right? Which of the two do you prefer?
Well, I prefer road racing, but time trials also have their charm. I really liked the course, which made things even better.
3.      Could you tell us more about your preparations?
Other than a few training sessions on the Gran Fondo race route, I did no special training. You know, it was a good excuse to visit Istria J
4.      How would you describe Gran Fondo? What makes it stand apart from other cycling races?
This marathon is quite special because it runs through the stunning Istrian landscapes. I must say that I also did some exploration on my own and found many hidden gems totally worth revisiting.
5.      Did you have a chance to soak in the beauty of Istria during the race?
Here’s one of the inevitable downsides of marathon races: it’s almost impossible to enjoy the scenery due to the speed and strong focus on cycling. This is why I’d recommend the Gran Fondo participants to come back and truly experience everything Istria has to offer, with or without a bike. I always take some time before or after the race to relax in this region, rightly called ’terra magica’.
6.      You’re known as a huge animal lover, so we were not surprised to see your dog at the race. Did you bring him along to cheer for you?
Of course, he was patiently waiting for me in Livade, where the ascent for Oprtalj starts, and got two chances to cheer for me and other cyclists.
7.      How important is the support of your family and friends at such events?
It’s very important. If it weren’t possible for me and my family to get together at a race, I’d probably skip most of them. It’s great that Gran Fondo takes place close to Slovenia and other European countries, so travelling and organising everything for the race is quite easy.
8.      What was it like to cross the finishing line? What was the first thing you did right after?
The finish was not stressful, so I reached the finishing line quite calm and happy, with my hands raised. Then I congratulated the cyclists who followed me and called my boyfriend, who had been supporting me in Livade, to let him know that I won.
9.      What about the entertainment after the race and the overall atmosphere at Gran Fondo?
Both the venue and the atmosphere were really pleasant and relaxed. It was rather cold for this time of the year, but sunny, which is what matters most. And there were plenty of entertainment options to get together with other participants and have fun after the race. That’s always a true pleasure.
10.  Can we expect you at Gran Fondo in Umag in 2024? If yes, what attracts you to the race the most?
As I’ve already said, I consider it a local marathon and will definitely come, even if only as a supporter. I love the route: the historic charm of Vižinada and Oprtalj always sweep me off my feet, and I quite enjoy the macadam section.
11.  Have you tried some Istrian dishes and distinguished local wines?
You bet I have! Istria is famous for exquisite wines and various specialities. Here you’ll find many winemakers and local producers, certainly one of the things that make this area so special. I always take the time to learn more about my travelling destination, and let me tell you that Istria has something new to offer every year.
12.  What would you say to your fellow cyclists who have not yet participated in Istria Gran Fondo?
Istria Gran Fondo is a truly special race. Both the route and the organisation aspect are amazing, so I’d definitely advise them to experience Istria beyond the race track: to visit its coastal towns and equally enchanting inland areas. A certain air of mysteriousness about it keeps me coming here year after year. Istria is also a dream destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Many people visit Istria for road or MTB cycling. They love the fact that after a good training session or race they can enjoy a homemade meal and a glass of superb local wine at one of numerous konobas and restaurants. Everybody’s welcoming – I always feel at home here and I’m grateful for that. What more could I ask for?
