The international painting event Ex Tempore Grožnjan once again transforms the picturesque Istrian town into an open-air studio under the clear sky. From 25 to 28 September 2025, Grožnjan’s squares, streets, and galleries will be filled with artists from Croatia and abroad, creating works on assigned themes, exhibiting their pieces, and engaging with the public.
Visitors will enjoy a rich visual experience, accompanied by a program that includes concerts, tastings of local products, and themed walks through the town. The event, which has nurtured creativity and multicultural dialogue for over three decades, is organized by the Italian Union of Rijeka, the Italian Community of Grožnjan, the University of Trieste, the Municipality of Grožnjan, and the Grožnjan Tourist Board.

About Ex Tempore
Ex Tempore Grožnjan is an international art competition launched in 1994 by the Italian Union and the University of Trieste, marking 30 years of their collaboration. It is held annually at the end of September in cooperation with the local Italian Community and the Municipality of Grožnjan.
The event brings together artists and visitors from around the world in a medieval town, offering exhibitions, concerts, and performances. Among the awardees are renowned artists such as Paolo Cervi Kervischer, Alfredo De Locatelli, Hari Ivančić, Zdravko Milić, Claudio Ugussi, and Igor Zenzerović.
Three main prizes are awarded, along with a special “City of Grožnjan” award. Since 2018, the “Daria Vlahov Horvat” prize has been introduced for young artists (aged 18–30), which includes a solo exhibition at the Fonticus Gallery. That same year, the Artists’ Award was also established, voted by the participants themselves.
Ex Tempore fosters intergenerational exchange and multicultural dialogue, embodying the “culture of coexistence and mutual respect,” as defined by Giuseppe Rota, a historical figure of the Italian National Community.
