In organization by Adria Bike, the Epic Rides Croatia series is coming to Buje for the first time this year, on September 20th, further expanding its network of routes and including northwestern Istria in this special cycling story.

The start from the heart of Buje’s historic center leads you along the first 12 km of the Parenzana – a former narrow-gauge railway from Trieste to Poreč, now a perfect walking and cycling trail with tunnels and the charming town of Grožnjan, worth a short detour. The route continues toward Završje, passing through meadows and forest.

At kilometer 24, there is a feed zone, and the trail then leads deeper into the woods to the abandoned village of Vrnjak – a “ghost town” that once had around a hundred residents. Next comes the longest climb, followed by a long descent along the ridge near the Slovenian border: first asphalt, then smooth gravel with panoramic views of the sea, inland Istria, and Trieste. The descent ends in front of Kozlović Winery, followed by climbs toward Momjan and Sveti Mauro, and the final kilometers leading to the last ascent back to Buje.

A total of around 51 km and nearly 1,000 meters of elevation gain – a true Istrian ride for gravel enthusiasts, with no major technical challenges, just two short but steeper climbs and minimal traffic. A perfect excuse for a beer and a deck chair at the finish.

WHAT IS EPIC RIDES?
Epic Rides Croatia is a unique series of organized cycling tours that bring together lovers of pedaling and nature. Unlike traditional races, there are no winners or pressure about results – the focus is entirely on camaraderie, enjoying the ride, and discovering the beauty of Croatian landscapes.

The rides take place across different parts of Croatia, with past editions exploring the Istrian coast, areas around Poreč and Labin, and the stunning scenery of Paklenica and Zrmanja. Each route is carefully selected to combine natural diversity – from sea and forests to vineyards and small villages – offering a memorable experience.

Epic Rides are not designed as competitions. The start is shared, with refreshment zones and logistical support along the way, but the atmosphere remains relaxed and friendly. Instead of medals and rankings, the reward at the finish is good company, beer or a bite of local food, and the feeling of being part of a big cycling family.
