ATP Umag – a tournament that creates winners


For decades, the ATP tournament in Umag has attracted the best tennis players in the world. Players who were world Number one’s, Grand Slam winners and young talents who won their first important ATP titles in Umag.
Cradle of champions
As many as nine players, who were at one point number one in the world rankings, have played on the courts in Umag, and together they spent more than 800 weeks in that position: Thomas Muster, Carlos Moyá, Marcelo Ríos, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Rafael Nadal, Novak Đoković, Gustavo Kuerten, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
More than 15 individual Grand Slam title winners have attended the Umag tournament so far, who, altogether, have won over 70 Grand Slam titles.
First ATP titles: Nadal, Wawrinka, Rublev, Alcaraz and Sinner
Particularly inspiring are the stories of tennis players who won their first ATP titles in Umag:
  • Rafael Nadal – he won his first professional ATP trophy in Umag in 2003, paired with Álexa López Morón

  • Stan Wawrinka – in Umag in 2006, he won the first ATP title of his career This popular guest of the tournament has competed in it a total of six times.

  • Andrey Rublev – winner of the 2017 tournament at just 19 years old

  • Carlos Alcaraz – he won his first ATP title in Umag in 2021, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament's history

  • Jannik Sinner – he won his first clay court title in Umag in 2022, which was a turning point on his path to the top.

Legends who have hall-marked ATP Umag
Thomas Muster, Carlos Moyá and Marcelo Ríos set the standard with their performances and titles in Umag: Muster won twice in a row (1992 and 1993) and in 1995, Moyá won the Umag tournament five times (1996, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2007), and through his performances and charisma, he became a fan favorite and a symbol of the tournament, while Marcelo Ríos captivated the audience with his virtuoso style of play, winning the title in 2000.
The great Novak Djokovic was a finalist in Umag in 2006, Gustavo Kuerten played here twice in the quarterfinals, while Juan Carlos Ferrero won in 2010, and returned to the Umag tournament six times.

The Umag ATP tournament is not just a place to watch matches. It produces moments in which the city draws a deep breath. The audience here enjoys top-notch tennis, music and gastronomy, and the atmosphere in the stands is remembered as vividly as the players' moves.
When a champion like Nadal, Alcaraz or Wawrinka says that Umag is dear to him because of his first title, it is not just a sporting fact. That's a promise for every new generation of players: that this is the place where tennis legends are born.
