Cycling in summer: Useful tips

With a few precautions to follow, summer can be the perfect time for cycling. Take advantage of your summer vacation for recreation on 2 wheels, because a bicycle is the healthiest means of visiting the attractions of northwestern Istria.
Regardless of whether you like the sun and warmth, high temperatures and strong UV rays are conditions that you must consider during the hottest part of the year. In order to enjoy safe and pleasant cycling in NW Istria in the summer, it is necessary to follow just a few short, but unavoidable, tips.
WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU?
1.   Enough water
2.   Electrolyte drink (optional)
3.   Sun protection cream
4.   A helmet or visor
5.   A charged mobile phone
6.   A map of the selected route
7.   Nuts or energy bars
8.   Repair tool
9.   A spare inner tube
10.   A spare T-shirt
11.   A basic first aid kit

Drink enough water

Hydration is extremely important in the summer, because the body loses more fluid through sweating, especially if you play sports. To stay hydrated, carry enough water with you and drink often, even before you feel thirsty. In addition to water, you can also drink electrolyte drinks that will help you replace salt and minerals lost through sweating. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before and during cycling as they can dehydrate the body.

Protect yourself from the sun

Wear sunscreen with a high SPF factor and apply it at least 30 minutes before cycling. Use quality sunglasses that will protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, but also from annoying flies. Prefer light and airy clothes that cover as much skin as possible without being too hot. Protect your head with a helmet that has a sun shield. Watch for signs of overheating such as dizziness, nausea, headache and fatigue. If you experience these symptoms, stop immediately, find shade and drink water.

Avoid the hottest part of the day

Plan to ride your bike early in the morning or later in the afternoon when temperatures are lower and the sun's rays less intense. Avoid riding between 10 am and 4 pm, especially if you are cycling with children. That's when the sun is most dangerous, and, therefore, the risk of sunburn, burns and dehydration. In summer, choose routes that offer as much shade as possible and avoid open, sunny roads without shelter. Parks, forest roads and coastal paths often offer more shade and more pleasant riding conditions.
