NOVIGRAD SQUID FISHING COMPETITION

The season of squid has started which means it’s the perfect timing for the traditional Novigrad squid fishing competition from the boats. 

On Saturday, 3 December, teams who sign up for the competition will set off from the port of Mandrač with a single challenge – catch as many squid as possible in less than 4 hours. The aim is to beat the competition with the heaviest catch. The fishing will take place in the area between Cape Malin near Lovrečica and Cape Busuj near Červar. Each team will consist of two members and they can choose their preferred fishing technique – trolling lines or bottom fishing. 

The most exciting part of the competition is the weighing of the catch, when all the participants eagerly await to see the biggest squid specimens, the impressive weights and tight battles where grams decide about the winner. A dinner for all competitors is organised at a local restaurant, where the results will be announced and the prizes awarded. 

The organiser of this interesting competition which is being held for 7 years now is the ‘Erik Radin’ sports & recreational club. The club organises fishing competitions and educations for fishermen and is committed to marine conservation and ecology as well as promotion of sports fishing.
