Umag in National Geographic

Umag has caught the eye of National Geographic, one the world’s largest scientific and educational institution. Its list of the 10 best trips of summer 2011 published in late April includes Istria. The text includes a riveting photo of Umag’s beach.

The photo highlights winning attributes of Istria’s beaches which National Geographic, an ambassador for natural conservation, describes in its recommendation to travellers. National Geographic points out that more than 40 Blue Flags awarded to beaches on Istria’s coast are a clear indication of superior water quality and environmental management standards in maintaining beaches.

The report states that Istria’s coast abounds in crystalline blue coves with pebble and sandy beaches bordered by fragrant pines. It describes Istria as a densely forested peninsula at the top right-hand corner of the Adriatic Sea. In addition to Umag, the report recommends the Medulin Riviera, Cape Kamenjak to the south, and Pula, the regional capital with its excellently preserved Roman Amphitheatre.

The best trips of summer 2011 were selected by the editors of National Geographic Traveller, one of the many magazines published by National Geographic in numerous countries around the world.
