On the western coast of Istria, between vineyards, olive groves and the open Adriatic Sea, lies Novigrad – Cittanova, a small coastal town known for its relaxed atmosphere, rich gastronomy and authentic Mediterranean charm.
While summer is lively and full of events, many travellers say that spring and autumn reveal the most beautiful side of the town, when temperatures are pleasant, nature is vibrant and the pace of life becomes slower.
Authentic Istria by the sea. Life in Novigrad naturally unfolds outdoors – on the streets of the old town, along the seafront promenade and on the main square. Here Istria is experienced slowly and authentically, accompanied by the warm hospitality of local people. Thanks to its location close to the Slovenian and Italian borders, Novigrad is easily accessible for visitors travelling by car from Central Europe.
The historic old town sits on a small peninsula surrounded by the sea and medieval town walls dating back to the 13th century. Colourful streets, small squares, galleries, restaurants and cafés create a true Mediterranean atmosphere. Watching fishermen leave the harbour early in the morning or return with the day’s catch is still part of everyday life here.
Flavours of Istria. Gastronomy is one of the key reasons visitors come to Novigrad. Fresh seafood, scallops and squid, extra virgin olive oil and excellent local wines are served in around forty restaurants throughout the town. Visitors can also enjoy wine and olive oil tastings at local producers, which offer an authentic experience of Istrian hospitality.
Spring and autumn – the best time to explore Istria. Spring brings vibrant green vineyards and olive groves around Novigrad, creating perfect conditions for cycling, walking or exploring the scenic Istrian countryside. Numerous cycling and hiking routes connect the coastline with the hills of inland Istria. Autumn offers warm colours, pleasant temperatures and even the possibility of swimming in the sea until late October.
Events that enrich the experience. Several events take place during spring and autumn, allowing visitors to experience the destination in a special way. The cycling event NOVA Eroica Istria (1–2 May) gathers gravel cycling enthusiasts from around the world who discover the landscapes of north-western Istria while enjoying local gastronomy and entertainment.
The popular Park Food Fest takes place in late May (22–23 May) and again in autumn (30–31 October), transforming the town park by the old harbour into a lively meeting point for food lovers, where creative street food dishes, local wines and craft beers are served in a relaxed atmosphere. Another highlight is Wine & Walk by the Sea (26 September) – a unique coastal walk during which participants discover wines from local winemakers while enjoying delicious bites and beautiful sea views.
