Zrenj – birth place of St. Jerome?

Zrenj (Italian: Stridone), situated on a hill overlooking the valley of the river Mirna, is a charming Istrian village, rich in history and mysterious legends. This small town, part of the municipality of Oprtalj, attracts visitors with its authentic atmosphere, beautiful panoramic views and intriguing stories that connect it with one of the greatest minds of early Christianity – St. Jerome.

Saint Jerome, a famous church father, translator of the Bible into Latin (Vulgate) and one of the most important theologians of late antiquity, was, according to some sources, born in the town of Stridone, which could be today's Zrenj. Although the exact location of Stridone has not been confirmed, local tradition strongly links Zrenj with this great man. His life was marked by dedication to the faith, learning and an ascetical life, and, as the patron saint of translators and librarians, he left an indelible mark on history.

In honour of St. Jerome, there is a church in Zrenj with a sacristy, which was built in 1910 on the site of a church mentioned in 1580. His statue stands proudly in front of the church, reminding us of the glorious past and his connection with this corner of Istria. Local residents proudly cherish the story of their famous countryman.

Apart from its connection with St. Jerome, Zrenj captivates visitors with its stone houses, narrow streets and untouched nature. Here you can feel the spirit of bygone times, enjoy yourself in peace, far from the hustle and bustle, and explore traditional Istrian architecture. The surrounding nature offers excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling and exploring hidden viewpoints.

As is the rest of northern Istria, Zrenj is known for its superb gastronomic treats. In the nearby taverns you can taste traditional Istrian dishes such as fusi pasta with truffles, maneštra (vegetable stew) and local cured meat delicacies. Autumn is a particularly attractive time to visit, when various events dedicated to wine, olive oil and truffles are held.
