The solo exhibition "Chiaroscuro" by Polish visual artist Kate Zwolinska will open on Thursday, 9 July 2026, at 8:00 PM at the "Pet kula" Gallery in Motovun.

The exhibition takes its title from the Italian term chiaroscuro—meaning light and shadow—a painting technique that uses strong contrasts to create depth, atmosphere, and emotion. The interplay of light is one of the defining characteristics of Kate Zwolinska's artistic practice. In her watercolors, light does not emerge through the use of white paint, but from the carefully preserved whiteness of the paper itself, resulting in refined compositions that express a subtle relationship between light, shadow, and space.

A self-taught artist born in 1974, Kate Zwolinska has been painting since an early age. Although she also works in oil on canvas, watercolor remains her preferred medium. She draws inspiration from masters such as John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla, and Leon Wyczółkowski, exploring the fleeting nature of light, colour, and time through her work. In recent years, she has focused particularly on the motifs of small towns, harbours, and secluded bays, interpreting them through her distinctive and delicate watercolor style.

Kate Zwolinska's works are held in private and public collections around the world. She has participated in numerous international exhibitions and competitions and has received a number of prestigious international awards.

The exhibition opening will take place on Thursday, 9 July, at 8:00 PM at the "Pet kula" Gallery in Motovun. The event is open to all visitors, and admission is free.

The exhibition is part of the Pet kula Gallery's summer exhibition programme, through which the Fotovun Photography Association, in cooperation with the Motovun Tourist Board and the Municipality of Motovun, continues to promote contemporary artistic expression and enrich Motovun's cultural offering during the tourist season.

The exhibition will remain on view until 12 August 2026 and can be visited during the gallery's opening hours, daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
