St. Peregrine’s Church in Zlatorog: A Thousand-Year-Old Story

On Cape Rožac, in the settlement of Zlatorog near Umag, stands St. Peregrine’s Church, one of the oldest sacred buildings in northwestern Istria and the oldest church in the Umag parish. It was built in the late 11th or early 12th century and is dedicated to St. Peregrine (Pellegrinus), the patron saint of Umag.

According to Church tradition and local historical heritage, this is the very place where St. Peregrine suffered martyrdom. A Christian deacon, he spread Christianity throughout Istria at the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century. Centuries later, the church was built in memory of his martyrdom and continues to preserve the legacy of Umag’s patron saint.

Throughout its long history, the church underwent several restorations, notably in the early 15th century and again in 1830. During the 19th-century restoration, a human skeleton was discovered beneath the altar, which local tradition believes may belong to St. Peregrine himself.

The simple stone building, with its single nave and modest bell gable on the façade, reflects the characteristics of medieval Istrian sacred architecture. Its uniqueness lies not only in its age but also in its remarkable setting. Situated on a small peninsula directly by the sea, surrounded by centuries-old pine trees and overlooking the open Adriatic, it blends harmoniously with the landscape.

Additional significance was given to the site by archaeological excavations conducted in 2023, which confirmed that the church was built upon the remains of a Roman maritime villa. Discovered mosaics and other findings testify to the continuity of life in this area from antiquity to the present day.

Today, St. Peregrine’s Church is one of Umag’s most recognizable landmarks, a place where history, nature, and cultural heritage come together.
